Staying Connected Through Blended Learning
Florida Virtual School supports Blended Learning Community (BLC) lab settings in schools across Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In these blended environments, students learn through a combination of online and face-to-face learning. The District offers face-to-face as well as virtual training for new FLVS facilitators and on-going support throughout the academic year in the form of progress monitoring to help schools ensure satisfactory completion of courses within the allotted time within a semester.
Blended Learning Communities Support School Instruction
These hybrid learning environments provide students:
- Online Florida Virtual School courses
- Online support from their FLVS teacher
- Daily face-to-face support from an in-school facilitator
- Monthly face-to-face support from their FLVS teacher
FLVS teachers who have been assigned BLC-based courses often refer to themselves as “lab teachers” because this role differs from their work with students who take Florida Virtual School courses entirely online.
M-DCPS offers FLVS courses in its BLCs during the regular school day by providing a lab environment and class period in which students can work, whereas FLVS Flex courses follow a flexible schedule and students must register and work on their own. Students interested in FLEX courses should first consult with their school counselor to inquire as to whether or not a physical equivalent of the course is offered at his/her school.
